Overhyping the End of Facebook
After reading various articles about the so called end of facebook, I thought I would weigh in and give my 2 cents. For those who don't know about Facegate, here's a quick rundown.
I've read a few articles saying that Facebook is done, it's declining, etc. But the thing is, probably only 3% of the populations knows this story. Of that, probably %2 use Facebook, and of that, probably %1 actually care. So, I don't think this will really do anything to Facebook's audience. The reason that Facebook got so popular is because of security and stupid, pointless applications. Yes, MySpace killed Friendster, and Facebook killed MySpace, but I feel it will be a while before Facebook sees a decline in it's audience.
- Facebook auctions off a percentage of shares, which turns into a bid war between MS and Google.
- Google loses the bid war, but no matter, they announce OpenSocial a week later.
- To keep up with the internet monster, Facebook announces it's new ad plan which is powered by Beacon
- MoveOn publicly criticizes Facebook for privacy concerns, the internets blows it's top.
- The back lash begins, and Facebook starts losing advertisers, namely Coke, everyone gets cold feet.
- Finally, today Facebook apologizes and makes it possible to opt-out globally.
